UV Mapping
I used UV mapping and the unwrap UVW modifier in order to do all of the colouring of the face of my model. This allowed me to get high amounts of detail in his face, particularly in his eye, eye patch, and scar.
I used a UV map for Brandolph's face because I needed a high amount of accuracy when I was texturing that part of the model. Because of this, I believed that I should use a program external to the material editor within 3ds Max. The benefit of using a UV map of that part of the model is that UV mapping "is the process of creating a 2D representation of your 3D object." This allows me to paint the texture in a program such as Adobe Photoshop without hassle.

Bridging
I used Bridging to assist patching together part of the model that were created separately, such as the head, hands and the feet of the model ass well as connecting polygons that should be connected but for some reason are not.
"Basically, this bridge tool lets you join two polygons." It also creates several extra polygons between the selected polygons. This allowed me to create parts of my model with ease, particularity parts that would be tedious using an extrusion method followed by welding the edges and vertices together.

Bump Map
I used a bump map in the development of the textures that I planned to use on the Clothes of Admiral Brandolph, This give the impression of high detail in his clothes despite keeping the polygon count very low.
"Bump mapping is a 3-D graphics simulation technique that uses object lighting calculations to alter texture map surface bumps without additional polygons." Bump mapping has the benefit of reducing CPU costs that are created when rendering large amounts of polygons, because it appears as though there is a high polygon count when there is only a lighting based texture applied to the rendered polygons. I used a bump map on the clothes of Admiral Brandolph to create a cloth like texture to the clothes without increasing my ploygon count.

Subdivision
I used two different methods of subdivision in the creation of Brandolph, the first was the use of the Quickslice tool which I used to create strategic polygons in certain parts of the model in order to create new structures in the model for example the eyepatch. The second tool I used was the use of the tessellate tool which I used to smooth out the torso of Brandolph.
"A subdivision surface is a polygon mesh that has been divided into more faces while retaining the object's general shape. You perform subdivision to add detail to an object, or to smooth it out." I believed that these methods of subdividing allowed me to get the most out of the detail of my model. where other methods of detail adding were not suitable.

Extrusion modeling
I used extrusion modelling for the entirety of the base model of both Brandolph and his Command and Control Platform.
"Extrusion is a method of adding geometry to a polygon primitive, and one of the primary tools a modeler uses to begin shaping a mesh." I found that Extrusion was a favorable method for modeling compared to box modeling that takes a primitive shape and then carves away at it until it take form. this is because it is difficult to escape the initial shape of the primitive without practice while extrusion doesn't have this problem as there is no primitive to start with, in my own opinion.

Texture Mapping
I used Texture mapping to apply certain textures to both Admiral Brandolph and his Command and Control Platform, to induce metallic, glass and cloth effects to my Biped and accessory.
"Texture map is a two-dimensional image file that can be applied to the surface of a 3D model to add color, texture, or other surface detail like glossiness, reflectivity, or transparency." I used this method because of the ease involved with creating a and applying a texture map within 3ds max
